SACRAMENTO (AP) — A federal appeals court on Friday struck down a California law that sought to ban the sale or rental of violent video games to minors.

The 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled that the 2005 law violates minors' rights under the Constitution's First and 14th amendments. The three-judge panel's unanimous ruling upholds an earlier ruling in U.S. District Court.

The head of an industry group that challenged the law praised the court's "rejection of video game censorship." State Sen. Leland Yee, D-San Francisco, sponsor of the law, urged state officials to appeal to the U.S. Supreme Court.
"We need to help empower parents with the ultimate decision over whether or not their children play in a world of violence and murder," Yee said.

Proper parenting. That's what people need. Use Internet filters, monitor activities, pay attention to what your kids buy and what their friends bring to your house. Establish rules and expect that they are followed; discipline if they are not. The government has no business doing your parenting for you.

I agree that the government should not get involved but the stores should be allowed to say "No, I will not sell you this game until your parents are here."

They are allowed to say that...but that's not their job. That's like saying that movie theaters should be stopping teenagers from seeing Rated R movies. Again, not their job.

Parents need to step up and be parents. Police the children and monitor their activities.

The problem with trying to push it off on the companies or the government, is that it affects the experience for the rest of us who are entitled to that information. Same thing with TV and trying to censor what we see. Use the filtering tools that are available to you and be a parent. That's what they did in the old days, these days should be no different.
