Hi, my name is Morgan and my boyfriend and I are thinking about moving to Staunton, VA with our almost 10 month old son. We currently live in Medway, MA about 40 minutes from Boston.

We have friends that just moved out that way and have come to the conclusion we can make around the same amount of money there but pay alot less for everything. I just have a few questions:

Is Staunton the middle of nowhere? I mean is it considered the boonies?
(We both grew up in a very small town but the city was 30 minutes away, the mall 15 min and the grocery store 2 mins).

Do the leaves turn color in the fall?
(I LIVE for the Fall)!

Are there places to swim in the summer?
(I know the ocean is 3 hours away but are there lakes with beaches).

How are the schools in Staunton?
(I have not read many good things so far. I know my son isn't even a year but I don't want to move to a place, like it then have to move when he's ready for school)

Are there malls nearby? Or any places to shop for clothes?

Are there things to do with children? Aquariums, zoos, apple/pumpkin picking, fairs?

I've read a couple of posts on here that say Staunton is all rednecks who are "the Walmart crowd." Is it really that bad? I mean I go to Walmart at LEAST once a week. They've got cheap stuff! I've been hoping one of those Super Walmarts would open up so I could make a one-stop shop for all of our stuff. I'm also relatively young (26) and still like to go out and have fun every once in a while. I'm happiest sitting in someone's backyard drinking a couple of beers though.

Don't do it. You will be disappointed. It once was a beautiful, historic small mountain town and now there is nothing but vacant buildings, fast food places and on most roadways in Staunton, the traffic is horrible.

I know the original post is over 10 years old, but I just wanted to say that I moved to Staunton in 2018 and LOVE it. A thriving downtown, a booming small business scene, and great food. And as a former New Orleanian that last one is important!

I'm a little north of you but I love the Staunton area as well.

Staunton is great. People are friendly, we have found some good restaurants there and its 10/10 beautiful. If I could find a job that paid well there I'd be living there in a second.
