Where you are working?
I have worked at the same real estate title insurance company for the past five years. Unfortunately, the market is still in the crapper and I've come to the conclusion now is the time to go back to school. Especially while I'm still young. I've been eyeing Virginia since high school but back then I had relocated from PA to FL with my parents.

How much you are willing to spend on housing?
I was leaning toward $130-$170K on a single family home that I can call my own. I have been wanting to relocate to VA as soon as all my ducks were in a row... and now is that time. Or maybe I'm just plain sick of Florida. A little bit of both, actually.

How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate?
Honestly? It depends on the job. If it's going to pay me I'm willing to go the distance.

If you have kids: Private school or public school?
No kids. Just two dogs. :)

What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for?
Small town feeling? Small city excitement? Suburbia delight?

I grew up in a small town in PA and loved the appeal of it. I love the downtown feel of the little antique looking shops and the adorable cape cod looking homes. In the same breath I love the hustle and bustle of D.C but know I wouldn't be able to afford living there and go back to school part time. I would love to be able to take the Metro to take me where I need to go but it's been so long since I've been in Virginia that I forget where it all goes. Eek.

Community amenities important to you?
Not entirely. I probably won't be around to enjoy them anyway.

Pie or cake?
It's going to come as a shock.... but I'm not a big sweet eater. My mom makes good cakes AND pies, though!

Everything Else...
I'm really open to anywhere in Virginia. As mentioned, I love D.C but would never be able to afford to live there and go back to school even if I might be able to find a good paying job. I had been looking at Lynchburg and Roanoke for a few years now but from what I'm reading it seems as if I'm better off going with Charlottesville or Staunton. I am also seeking to further my education at one of of your colleges/universities but I have a terrible time trying to figure out who had the best secondary education program. Any suggestions?? Thanks for any and all help!!

Have you visited any of these cities? Perhaps taken some campus tours? Tried to mingle with the students to get a sense of the general culture? Perhaps you'd get a better sense of where you'd feel most at home.

Hi there! Ironically my dad, who I didn't grow up around, moved from the Scranton area to Clearwater. I can understand why you want to leave. That area just never appealed to me.

With your price range, I would suggest somewhere in the Shenandoah Valley. I live in Staunton so maybe I can help out in this area. If you want to go back to school there is a community college in the area. Blue Ridge CC. It serves the Staunton and Harrisonburg areas. Prices here are still relatively cheap. You will be hard pressed to find a place that's livable in Charlottesville with your pricerange. Harrisonburg also has James Madison U. Cville has UVA. If you wanted to commute to either of these, Staunton would put you in the middle.

All of these areas have I'm guessing the type of homes you like. Many victorians, some cape cods, many craftsmen, and too many ranches. One benefit of this whole area is that at it's farthest, Staunton, DC is only 2.5 hours away depending on traffic. That's the city, not the extremely far out burbs that you could catch the VRE or metro on.

I don't know if others would agree, but I strongly feel that the Shenandoah Valley has a very central PA feel. Minus accents and civil war history. Idk. When I drive up i81, I just don't see much difference. It all looks the same, and the people seem similar to me. And with Harrisonburg you have a huge mennonite community replete with the whole horse and buggy thing going on. Reminds me of the Amish. And the way Harrisonburg looks makes me think it would fit into PA somewhere. Maybe I'm crazy. But in either case, I hope you can settle on a place that will make you happy!
