Have you tried Smyth County? It will give you that small town feel. It's right next to Wythe County. I love Grayson County too though..Independence is small, country, peaceful..Galax is a lot like Wytheville to me though.

I'm originally from Lee County(Pennington Gap).Lived there for over 20 years While I love my hometown,I think Big Stone Gap is the most beautiful place in the area and maybe just what you're looking for.Located in Wise County.

All the towns in southwest VA are great and great folks in them. There are exceptions of course like Haysi and Pound but towns touching them are fine as are the outlying areas. Coeburn is another no go really but then you go out of it and you are still in good company.

The areas outside Dickenson County have it beat in many ways but it is home to me.

You will not find too many unfriendly folks in such areas but people are people everywhere you go.

What is the issue with Coeburn? We (hubbie & I) may be leaving RVa for SWVa if he takes a job out near St. Paul. Just looking @ homes to buy.
