Hello,

I am interested in renting the Hillwood @ Mark Center located on 5797-A Rayburn Avenue, Alexandria, 22311. Looking at their website, I think I'm sold on this apt. Does anyone have an opinion about this apartment community or info about the surrounding area? Are there walkable shops nearby? Safe area? What sort of residents would live around here (age, diversity, singles vs. families)? Thanks!

actually this seems like a pretty good choice. the types of folks you would run into would be of all types of nationalties and i think it is mostly families. there is a shopping center called Mark Center within walking distance and Landmark Mall is right down Beauregard St (not for much longer i hear). The area is pretty safe as is most of the city. Commuting would be an easy task as I-395 is close by and if you want to ride with a couple of friends you can take HOV off Seminary Rd. to go to and come from DC and the pentagon. Also you can catch the buses to and from the pentagon. Even though i like the Duke St area better this complex is a good idea.

I used to work on Beauregard Street and go to the gym at the Bally's in the Landmark Plaza (not the mall) up that street. Judging by the location of that complex on the map, you're very close to a shopping center with a Giant and some small shops and perhaps a CVS. That area behind Landmark is very residential but heavily treed. You could easily miss that little shopping center if you're not looking. It's on the right side as you head south on Beauregard in the direction of Landmark.

If you're willing to walk all the way down to the end of Beauregard, you'll find a large Shopper's Club supermarket in the Landmark Plaza.

The other destinations will require an automobile.

There's the Landmark Mall and the BJ's warehouse club across Duke on Van Dorn Street.

If you go north on Beauregard, you'll head toward Skyline City and Bailey's Crossroads. You'll find a very large shopping center across the street from Skyline City. That has a large Giant supermarket to my recollection.
