My whole family is relocating to Raleigh, NC, and we are thinking of going too. Problem is, I'm a country girl at heart, I love all things nature and would love to live on 2-5 acres and actually own a horse some day. But I have 2 young children who need lots of friends and good schools and things for them to do. IMHO the country life is a much more wholesome environment to raise a family, but at the same time I don't want to deprive them or us of being in a family populated area (year round). The reason I'm thinking of the VA mountains is that it isn't too far from Raleigh. Of course we would want Dr. offices and a hospital nearby as well as some restaurants and at least a Target or Walmart, the rest I can get on the internet. A movie theater would also be a must.

Any suggestions are greatlly appreciated!

Give Franklin County, VA a look. Reasonably close (< 30 minutes) to the heart of downtown Roanoke, VA. Very close (< 20 minutes) to Rocky Mount, VA. Very good school system. Plenty of things to do. Movie theaters in Rocky Mount and Roanoke. Some of the best doctors and hospitals in Virginia thanks to Carilion (Franklin Memorial in Rocky Mount, Roanoke Memorial in Roanoke, plus hundreds of specialists and many family practice locations). Virtually all of the folks in the Roanoke area are year round, with the exception of Smith Mountain Lake, but even there there are many young families (some even frequent this forum). Big box stores galore in Rocky Mount and Roanoke.

Mountains too!

Not too far from Raleigh. Less than 3 hours. You've got lots of other choices in the VA Mountains but I'm not sure you could find a better place given your priorities. Give it a look.

Hope this helps,

Sean

Thanks so much for your response and the gorgeous pictures! That looks like a slice of heaven to me! I'm going to look into those areas right now.

Thanks again, so nice of you.
