Parts of VA appear very SE or "southern". However, because of Washington, DC and its ever-spreading sprawl/growth/influence, I consider our area [culturally] as "East Coast", with similarities to Balto, Philly, and NYC as a city but with its own flavor.

If you drew a line right down the middle of the continental US between north and south, it would pass right through VA, so from a purely geographic standpoint it's literally on the line. Call it mid-atlantic if you want, it's right in the middle.

When people talk about "the south", though, they almost always mean something more than just geography. It's a cultural and historical region that roughly corresponds to the geographic southeast, but not perfectly. VA is part of that cultural-historical region even though geographically it's on the line.

Other areas like South Florida are firmly in the southeast geographically but aren't really part of the cultural-historical south.

As you can see, this map doesn't have Tennessee in the south, but obviously TN is universally considered a southern state.

I live in Virginia now but .. being born and raised in South Florida, 1,000 miles from where I now sit .. I always thought that Virginia was a Northern state .. and had lots of Hillbillies!

Now, don't go tellin my BH that cause she's a True Richmonder and a real Southern Belle!

There's probably 200 threads with the same or similar title... can't the OP just put his 2 cents into one of the existing threads and read opinions there instead of creating another one?
