Canine Castle,
Don't give up. Keep looking and let's hope you find something in Virginia. Maybe not quite as isolated would be exactly what you're looking for - you just might not know it yet. Best of luck to you.

Added note: our weather sure beats the heat and drought in Texas. Especially the last couple of years. We actually have all four seasons here in Virginia.

ShadowBat, the dormant volcano is called Trimble Knob. It is located in the town of Monterey. If you visit Monterey, I think you can figure out where it is - it's kind of hard to miss. It is on the West side of Rt. 220 just south of Rt. 250. When I would walk to the top of the mountain my house was on, I could find volcanic rock.

I have been in Floyd and from what I have read, I have suspected that it and Highland are somewhat similar. But Floyd is much closer to retail stores and commercial centers. I've heard that Floyd is home to some Va. Tech professors and other staff. You do not have that in Highland.

In Highland, rt. 250 is the only road that goes east to west across the entire county.

It is a beautiful county. If you visit, go to the Confederate Breastworks on rt. 250 as you enter the county from Augusta County.

Today's (Oct. 23, 2011) issue of the Richmond Times-Dispatch has an article on page B4 titled, "Research interest is alive in Va.'s two dead volcanoes." The article is about Trimble Knob in Highland County and Mole Hill (near Harrisonburg).

Default The demographics and lay of the land is very different in Floyd, va vs. Highland County which is all mountainous!

The demographics and lay of the land is very different in Floyd, va vs. Highland County which is all mountainous! We are considering relocating to Highland County in Monterey.... we have met some people including two realtors, cattlemen (angus cattle are a big ag business there).... you can not beat the views which are million dollar views! The people we met were all very nice and accepting.... especially if you are an experienced firefighter!
Community involvement is the key in a small place like this.... they also will be there for you if your sugar shack burns down like an 80 year old mans did a couple of years ago. Just like the Amish, they came together and put this man back in business.... they take care of their neighbors instead of those in the city who dont know their neighbors. I have lived in both types of places and prefer the small town atmosphere any day of the week!...

Countrygirl2540, I hope what you think Highland will be like turns out to be true. It sure wasn't like that when I lived there.

I've been to Monterey once and it seemed like a very nice little town. I ate lunch at Haps Highs Restaurant, very good food with friendly service. I think it would be interesting to try out living there, but maybe not forever.
