Looking to take my wife on a 10-year anniversary trip in September. We live in Raleigh, NC but I'm looking for a place in Virginia to road-trip for 2-3 days. (We've done a lot of NC trips but have not spent a lot of time in Virginia.)

I would like a place that has a walkable town of some sort with a fair amount of things to do. (Shops, restaurants, historic sites, entertainment, etc.)

We've been to Northern Virginai/DC quite a bit and even Annapolis, MD which we liked. Aside from the DC area we have not spent any time in other areas of Virginia. Right now the one place I have in mind is Williamsburg but wondered if anyone else had suggestions on other places to visit like that in Virgina.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

The Roanoke area, especially downtown, has gained a lot momentum lately and offers many entertainment, dining and shopping attractions. You'll also like to visit here if you are interested in outdoor attractions, as there are countless trails to hike and mountains to see. Its still a relatively unknown area, in comparison to Williamsburg or NOVA, but has become a bit more touristy in the past several years. You can learn more here:

If you have already looked at Williamsburg and would like to spend time there, I would definitely recommend that as well. Its a great area to visit and has many attractions.

I'd suggest Charlottesville -- tour the University, Monticello, Michie Tavern, there's a walkable downtown. Depending on your budget, stay at Boar's Head Inn (a little expensive but beautiful resort with golf, spa, tennis, etc fabulous Sunday Brunch) and then take a hot air balloon ride (from the Inn) early one morning to see the gorgeous countryside from a different perspective. There are also wineries close by to tour. That should easily fill three days

Have fun!

(I should have added that there are lots of other hotels in the area and I don't think you have to stay at the Inn to do the balloon rides)

I agree those are good areas - we took a long weekend in Lynchburg of all places and really enjoyed it. Stayed downtown, got there Friday early afternoon, didn't take the car anywhere until Sun. when we went to Bedford for the D-Day Memorial (highly recommend it). There were some places to walk to (not much shopping but there is a farmer's market type thing Sat. w/food and vendors).

Don't forget Fredericksburg, if you're into Civil War stuff...and even, Revolutionary! Lots of shops...a new hotel downtown (Marriott), and lots of restaurants with outside seating around the downtown area. Midway between Richmond and DC off of I-95.
