Living "off the grid"....by definition means you are not connected to the electric grid. I know of no law/rule that states that you must have your home connected to the electric utility.County directory.

Did you check through all the building code requirements to get a permit for this or that? Sometimes these requirements come up in odd places.

I know you can actually do it in Esmeralda County, NV...but other than that wondrous place be careful.

Did I ? No, that's why I took the time to add a link to the county services....where the OP could get definitive answers regarding off grid living in Mecklenburg County Virginia.

If you are off grid why do you care about regulations? You won't be asking for any services from the locality, so why does it matter what you do on the land you own if you will be self-reliant?

In some places failure to follow building codes may be a misdemeanor or, under some circumstances, a felony. So you could actually end up in jail.

Normally governments tend to go for civil injunctions. But those can also lead to bad consdquences if ignored.

"Off Grid"...refers to not being connected to the "electric grid." Is the OP is meaning something else ? We can speculate all we want on the OP's intentions, and the Mecklenburg County regulations, however the OP has the link to the County offices and associated phone numbers....what more is there to say on the issue..the ball is in her court.

From the County zoning document, Agriculture sub-section:

"3-1 Use Regulations
A building or land shall be used only for the
following purposes:
(a) single family dwellings;
(b) growing and harvesting of food and fiber,
including the raising of livestock and poultry;
(c) accessory structures and uses including campers
and travel trailers conditioned upon there being
an approved septic and well system installed
prior to issuance of a building permit;"

Bolding in mine.
