Funny these same standards aren't held of Maryland. Why is that, in your estimation? Maryland has always been located exactly where it is today, and you can certainly go to many places across small town or rural Maryland and hear southern accents...

The formerly great Commonwealth of Virginia is dead.

I badly wanted to retire there. No more. I went to Tennessee instead. Such a shame. For the last 20 years, I have been looking forward to retiring to the beautiful Commonwealth of Virginia, and now she is dead.

R.I.P. Virginia.

It was good while it lasted.

Too late now.

Maybe unpopular but after spending my entire life growing up in a NY household in the south, I’m glad RVA is getting more northern influence.

Glad you retired in TN. I’d rather productive people move to VA. There is nothing noble about moving somewhere cheap so you can live comfortably off of SS while stressing the local health systems (to which your taxes aren’t contributing). In a perfect world people will work their high-paying jobs in Virginia. After 30-40 years of paying local and state taxes they will move to become a drag on another state’s economy

Edmund Ruffin can get no peace even in death. His last diary entry before wrapping himself in the Confederate flag and killing himself was:

And now with my latest writing and utterance, and with what will near to my latest breath, I here repeat, & would willingly proclaim, my unmitigated hatred to Yankee rule—to all political, social and business connections with Yankees, & to the perfidious, malignant, & vile Yankee race.

And while I have never been told when out of the country "yankee go home," as a Virginian I knew it never applied to me. Now I am confused.

I do not consider Virginia to be southern despite parts of the state being southern culturally, such as Bristol up to Lynchburg.

I think of Virginia as the transition zone like my home state of Missouri with NOVA being slightly more northeastern.

I've been impressed with Virginia politics lately. Virginia seems to be more tolerant and progressive compared to its southern neighbors.
