Considering back then that ports were powerhouses, Maryland would have benefited. Virginia on the other hand, would have been shafted.

JI, Yeah that was part of Cameron's objective.. to take away Virginia's right to self-determination. He wanted to carve VA up, and banish it away from the city of Washington. He was calculating that (his new) Maryland could essentially act as a moat that protected the Northern capital, no (?)
Cameron's sort of a forgotten historical figure, but he was a deeply corrupt Lincoln subordinate. He ultimately resigned as Lincoln's Secretary of War (due to scandal). And is quoted as candidly stating, An honest politician is one who, when he is bought, will stay bought.

Anyways, cool topic.

So -apparently there was no railroad between Fredericksburg and D.C. at that time - unless you went far out of the way west through Orange, VA .
