We are a young family new to the area looking to make friends and learn our way around. We just purchased farmland in the area which we are planning on developing soon. We have three elementary school aged children.

Give it some time. If you have your kids in public school, that's the easiest way to meet people, through your children. Nearly everyone I've met since our move have been parents of school friends.

That's a very rural area, with limited resources. Regional economy is based on tobacco, lumbering, and prisons. Some residents commute to Fort Pickett (national guard), Fort Lee (army) near Petersburg, and the cigarette factory in South Richmond. Brunswick's 2010 population was 57% African-American (but that was before the recent closure of Saint Paul's College).

Saint Paul's College (historically black college) in Lawrenceville, unfortunately closed a couple of years ago.

Southside Community College at Alberta (by I-85), offers classes in technical and trades careers.

Be careful driving on all highways around Emporia, VA, which is the most notorious speed trap in VA.

I have many cousins in the Blackstone area, and 2 presently living near Alberta, VA. Blackstone's population will be growing in a couple of years, with the opening of the training center at Fort Pickett, to train Federal security agents for U.S. embassies overseas.

Many people enjoy boating and fishing on Lake Gaston, and Kerr Reservoir (Buggs Lake) on the VA - NC border, and some have built retirement homes.

For entertainment, I suggest the following, for both adults and children

The Colonial Theatre | Downtown South Hill, Virginia This is in South Hill, VA

The Colonial Theatre | Downtown South Hill, Virginia

The contact # for 4H club for youth in Lawrenceville (434) 848-2151

The contact # for Boy Scout regional council in Richmond (804) 355-4306

Be sure and visit this model train layout in Blackstone, during or before the Christmas season, which measures a whopping 18 x 56 feet. http://www.bevellshardware.com/TrainDisplay.aspx
