Helping a relative living nearby over age 65, both of us in Virginia, do her state 2019 estimated taxes. Up through 2018, there is mention in the VA Form 760 instructions a $12,000 deduction for seniors over age 65 (subject to a $50K single/$75K married income cap reduced $1 for $1 if above if born 1939 or later). Just wondering with the tax law passed by the VA State legislature in February last month, any change to that? The 2019 (and even the 2018) estimated tax instructions (form 760ES) are not clear on this, and Googled not finding any results (maybe not using the right search terms). My gut feeling is that they did not change this as lot of people 65 and older otherwise be negatively affected. Did talk with a VA Tax Department rep by phone, who without hesitation said *for now* that has not changed As estimated taxes in Virginia are due May 1, 2019, taking into account this $12k deduction or not makes a huge difference is question?, and could be subject to a penalty if account for in estimate and then it is not available on the 2019 760 tax form early next year ($690 at max 5.75% rate). Taking a person's verbal word vs. what might be out there, if any electronically in writing?
