Warrenton is a day trip for us and I had not seen/heard of this. I searched and sure enough old town Warrenton had a scarecrow contest on Main St for the last two years. Didn’t see anything for a 2019 repeat – yet!

I definitely agree with Shepherdstown and Harpers Ferry while in WV, and Middleburg is probably the most scenic in that area of VA. Just a 30 minute backtrack out of Quantico (to the south) lands you in Fredericksburg which has a great historic downtown and well worth the trip. https://www.fredericksburgva.gov/201/Historic-District Another backtrack on the return trip of about 20-30 minutes east would put you in Old Town Alexandria https://www.visitalexandriava.com/ol...8aAoaOEALw_wcB which could well be the star of your trip given the variety of shops, that includes yarn as well. https://fibrespace.com/

I noticed this about Petersburg my last visit earlier this year too. Still a little rough around the edges, but they are making great progress downtown! Same thing is happening in downtown Lynchburg and many other Virginia downtowns and places that were written off 10-15 years ago (even Bristol and Farmville have got nice downtowns these days with stuff to do and see) . I have really noticed an upswing in downtown activity across the Commonwealth these past few years which is great to see!

So we ended up doing Sharpsburg, Warrenton (Yes they have scarecrows again this year, great small town and an awesome bakery - Red Truck Bakery!), Occoquan, Fredericksburg to name a few
