But Rickcin in NY State you did not have personal property taxes. VA personal property taxes can be significant if new vehicles and a toy.

No personal property taxes in NJ either.

Blew my mind when I was considering DE. Not a lot of taxes but the fees can be significant.

For me the move to VA will be primarily lifestyle. Total costs in southern most NJ are not that bad.

Yes, we pay taxes each year on our vehicles and it’s about $210 for a 2015 Subaru and $110 for my 2009 Honda Element, so even when added into my taxes, it’s still way less than NY or NJ.

Yearly registration fees and inspection fees are also considerably less here and out auto insurance, with the same carrier, State Farm, is less than half of what it was in NY. This is part of the reason why NY and NJ are tops on the list for citizens moving out of those states. Mainly for the cost and the political climate as well, IMO.
I lived there my entire life but knew I was not staying once I stopped working!

If you’re really happy in NJ and don’t mind paying more, by all means stay there.

This is the way we feel. We are in MD (which is not great for retirement by any means, but our property taxes are 4,000 and no personal property tax on cars. There is also no tax on food. What everyone is watching now (which will be a game changer) is the Democrats proposal to tax services. Our Governor is fighting it so we'll see. This along with the crime situation in the state will force us to leave. Everyone's concern now is what will happen when we lose Larry Hogan.

But, the best advice after investigating other states is to live where you will be most happy. Honestly for us moving to Virginia will probably be a "wash" financially.

As for my relocating to a Southern free-state, I will enjoy being beyond the control of Coastal Leftists.

Bravo, Finalmove. The Virginia state motto "Sic Semper Tyrannis" is a Latin motto which in English means "Thus Always to Tyrants". (A common used mistranslation of the Virginia motto is "Death to Tyrants".)

May the good citizens of the Old Dominion live up to our state motto in support of both our State and national Constitutions, and their amendments.

The Dems ran on gun control and won, just two and 1/2 months ago. The election last November IS the political climate in Virginia. The Virginians that attended the rally already voted and they were outnumbered.

My prediction is that once the GA session is over, everyone forgets about it and gets on with their lives. The D’s are passing very popular legislation (including these popular gun control measures).

To the retiring person....good luck in LA. Thanks for leaving Virginia right when your medical costs will become a burden. You aren’t punishing Virginia for having spent your productive years here contributing to the tax base then moving when you become nonproductive. You’re actually helping
Right. That is why so many states offer retirees tax free status. Because they don't want them.

Retirees use government services much less than working aged people do. Retirees have the most disposable income to spend. States love to lure retirees, but that is OK, you keep go on pretending that Virginia loves losing their retiree tax base.

As a working person, VA offers a lot that appeals to me. Reasonable government without the extremes like CA or TN. Reasonably close to both mountains and oceans in many parts of the state. Good access to points farther north and south without being in BFE. A good economy in the population centers.

Once they get legal weed, and it will happen, that will be another feather in the cap.

probably voting for more democrats. GWB flipped the state when he doubled the size of the federal government. everyone in NOVA is a government leach, so they aren't going to vote against their jobs. it's cool though, because the libs are contained in the worst parts of the state. it's a big state, and they aren't coming to the mountains to take any guns. I am worried they might raise taxes, because that's what they do, but they're gonna have to look far and wide to find my stash.

You think states and localities offer tax breaks to seniors because it makes good economic sense?

It all started because of high senior poverty rates in the 60s. ~30% were below the poverty line in the late 60s. Today it's about 10%, and yet despite the aging of baby boomers (20% of America will be over 65 by 2030), states are ramping up these benefits for seniors. It blows holes in state budgets across the country, but hey, old folks vote so we'll figure it out later.

Agree with this from VA Yankee:
The biggest destructive path is the fact that the extremes of both parties have become their mouthpiece and they aren't representing the core of their members. Democrats are no more "socialists" as you put it any more than Republicans are Fascists, you can be a liberal Republican or be a conservative Democrat it is allowed. Politics used to be the art of compromise not my way or the highway over every issue where its all or nothing and the looser takes their football and goes home.

My son has set up roots in VA, because of job. He is young and pays little if any attention to politics. Hopes we will eventually move to VA. I told him the humidity sucks and as long as VA keeps going further left, I cannot do it, sorry bud.
