naturally it's a beautiful state but besides that, is it the weather, taxes, housing cost, or something else.

while i'm posting, let's take southwest va say from roanoke south & east since it's a favorable place, if givin a choice of any town within that area were would you pick & why.
I lived in VA most of my life, but live in Chattanooga, TN now. We love it here and would not move back to VA. Cost of living is terrific, lots of oudoor activities, downtown waterfront is fabulous! No state income tax either. That being said, we did live in Lexington, VA. a beautiful small town in the Shenandoah Valley. there are few jobs there except for the colleges. If you are thinking of retiring, it is great for that.

Where's all this pollution you mentioned? I live in Winchester, VA near the WV border and 1 1/4 hrs from Washington, DC, and the northern part of Shenandoah Valley. I haven't seen any high pollution days since moving here (8 months ago).

Most of Virginia is very similar to Tennessee except for Northern Virginia which is really a piece of New Jersey or New York in Virginia. If you are a transplant from the Northeast or California, I would suggest Northern Virginia. If you prefer a more Southern lifestyle, more laid back, friendlier people, I would say either Tennessee or the rest of Virginia.

One caveat, as Northern Virginia gains influence they may be able to implement some liberal laws in the state government (for example higher taxes, abortioninsm, etc) that will have a statewide impact while this is not likely to happen in Tennessee.

Southwest Virginia, the Shenendoah Valley, the Roanoke area and East Tennessee are some of the most beautiful places in America with some of the most wonderful people and is affordable. But if your a Starbucks craving, Obama voting, fast paced, completely career centered yuppie, you'd probably be be best in Northern Virginia esp Arlington.
