Maybe I should have put that in another way. Lynchburg has such a peculiar culture or attitude (not sure how to phrase it) that It it sure isn't for everybody. I lived there for a decade. It is a big difference from Roanoke or Staunton/Harrisonburg/Winchester. Maybe it is a perfect fit for you, I am not sure.

You might explore a city/country/nature combo. We used to have good friends in Forest, Va. Beautiful nature, lakes, communities built around large to medium lakes; nearby historic Poplar Forest, parks, trips to Smith Mountain Lake and all right beside Lynchburg.

But no job opportunities....

Agree

I live in Henry County, between Martinsville and NC border. There are business within 15 miles but if you need anything more about 35 miles to either Danville, or Greensboro NC

My area has everything you asked for very quiet and relaxed, low taxes and I have a great view of the Blue Ridge Mts

Truthfully, I'd like to live as far away from a military base or major college as possible (Norfolk has both).
If you live in the northeast portion of LYH you wont have any student related issues. Most stick on campus or in some of the large new apts near campus. Also not much student activity in the bars as most dont drink in public at least.

Thanks for the replies everyone. It looks like I'll be going with Roanoke. I feel that it has the best balance of everything I'm looking for.

You won't regret it. While Roanoke is a little large and busy for me I know it can be a great place for those still wanting more choices in their lives. And Roanoke has pretty much everything you need to include close proximity to some great areas to visit. Make sure Bedford and the National D-Day Memorial is on your list. Visit on a nice day.
