Yeah, I'm looking forward to it. Roanoke seems to be the best place for me- low COL, low population growth (I can't stand "boomtowns"), decent urban character, great natural setting, relatively tame suburban sprawl, no major colleges or military bases, manageable crime, pleasant 4 season climate, vibrant downtown, no major cities within a 100 mile radius (I like 'isolation' to some extent), not a rust-belt dump, very little historical "baggage", and the perfect size metro for me. From what I've seen on google maps, it looks like a nice town. I just wish it had good public transportation and a more compact, walkable core. Is there anything I should be wary of before moving there?

Someone more local can better advise on this but there are some neighborhoods you may want to avoid. Even then, from training some local LEO's there, none of the neighborhoods are so crime ridden and awful that you'll be driven out. One thing I advise folks that if they get a chance catch a local LEO at something like a 7-11 or something and talk to them. While many PD's will not give advice on where to live and where to avoid many LEO's do not mind giving this advice as they know their areas better than anyone. Since it may go against policy they may be a little reserved on this but I never hesitated to help someone. If you cannot do this then ask the local PD how to obtain crime stats for the city and for the areas they serve. But keep in mind there is no neighborhood that is crime free. Even gated communities in my NOVA county had some crimes issues. No area is immune.
