Hi, I'm looking to leave NJ and was seriously looking at NC, however it seems that I keep reading that due to the hot and humid summers that there are a lot of roaches in homes. I know less about VA. Are the summers in Virginia just as hot and humid as NC? Are there a lot of homes that get roaches?

I do know that there are roaches in every state. I know that there are many types of them. I'm just wondering if they are more prevalent because VA is humid.

I have no official answer for you but I moved to VA in 73 and roaches have not been an issue anywhere I've lived. I've been in Northern VA and now in the Shenandoah Valley. Of course living conditions can play a big role in all of this. We keep a clean home and we bring in an exterminator 4 times a year. I've been in our home in the mountains now for over 5 years and I do not believe I've seen one roach. But as a now retired LEO I've been in homes where I saw roaches crawling on the walls. I am in NC a lot as my daughter and grandson live there. East Coast portion. While both VA and NC have plenty of humidity we see more breaks from it during the summer months. Where my daughter is located she rarely sees a break.

Not sure where you are reading there are a lot of roaches but I would suspect what you are reading may not be very accurate.

I don’t know about VA, but, we are near the NC coast (humid!)and we’ve never had roaches. Most people here have pest control service every 3 months and indoor bug problems are very rare.

Lots of NJ transplants are in this area.

I live right on the coast in Virginia, and roaches are definitely an issue. We have more of an issue with the giant dark brown ones. They mostly live outside, but find their way indoors quite often.

All of my neighbors have to use pest services to keep them at bay. No matter how clean you keep your house, those little buggers always find a way to survive.

I'm curious to know what the difference between the coastal area in VA vs NOVA or the Shen Valley where barring something unusual we just don't see them but maybe one every year, if even that.

Not much talk about them around Central VA. Never seen any indoors. Much more talk about stinkbugs. But they really dont do anything.

Thank you. I think what I've read was that while roaches are in every state, they thrive in hot humid climates, and that the south fits that description. I do not have roaches, and I keep a clean house, but I know for example, in FL they say most people get them. Again, I realize VA and NC isn't as far south as that, but I could not live in a home with roaches.

So if there isn't a roach problem or insect problem why are people there getting pest control a few times a year? I lived in my home for 20+ years and never has pest control come out. We'd get the occasional spider but I'd rather that than all the toxic chemicals. Maybe you aren't getting roaches because people there all have routine pest control.

Actually, I can handle seeing a few bugs in the home such as the occasional spider or stink bug (they do startle me at first but I can live with it), but no way will I tolerate a roach!

I have 60 plus years in 2 states. Fla and VA. In VA since 73. I have family all over Fla and when I vacation there I do not recall seeing roaches so if they are around they stay pretty hidden. Maybe my family maintains a regular pest control schedule like we do. I think you may be overly worried for nothing. I would choose VA over Fla any day of the year or NC over Fla any day of the year. Western NC that is and not the coast. Maintain pest control (4X's a year for us at about $75 a shot I believe.). Keep a clean home and I believe you'll be fine.
