My partner is set to move to Dinwiddie, VA. We are moving from East Tennessee mountains (small city with only Food Lion, Dollar General). I am a NC native from the 3rd largest city there. I was looking forward to moving to metro Richmond where there’s plenty of shopping, restaurants and entertainment, but he wants to keep a country life with proximity to the city. I kinda don’t mind since I enjoy nature, hiking and privacy.
I have some questions:

What is Dinwiddie like? What are people who live there generally like?

If I work in Richmond, downtown for example, would the commute be fine every day?

How is the internet service?

We have elementary aged kids, are the schools great?

Do most folk go to nearby Petersburg or Colonial Heights for more amenities? What other places to go?

One of the couples on "90 Day Fiancee" lives on a farm there. That's all I know.

Northern Dinwiddie is very much Richmond metro -- this should be moved to the Richmond forum.

It's a good place to live but if you get stuck with southside electric cooperative as your electricity provider plan on lot's of outages.

Also consider Powhatan, Prince George and Amelia County as other similar, rural, options to Dinwiddie. From Dinwiddie you could probably be in downtown in about 30 minutes.

Keep in mind these counties are all strongly traditional and conservative. In fact, Powhatan is the reddest county in all of Virginia. That said, we're welcoming of newcomers who don't try and change everything.

I'd check on the water. i have friends in Powhatan on well water and sometimes in the summer, they have to go to the laundry mat the well gets so low. Another, in King George can't drink the water from the well anymore.

I personally would not want to commute from Dinwiddie to downtown Richmond..... it would be heavy traffic for most of the 40 miles on I-85/I-95. It won't be relaxing!

I would definitely choose Powhatan or an area west or NW, and the shopping districts out on that side of the Richmond area are a lot newer.... Petersburg is not the most 'up to date' small city. Any commute to downtown Richmond will still be in the 40-50 minutes range on a good day.

The country-side in all of these towns around Richmond is not like East TN.. no mountains anywhere in sight. It's more like the country around Charlotte.
