I have the chance to buy some land between Gate city and Lebanon in swva, with the possiblty of moving myself my wife and 11 year-old daughter there.
I would love to hear from anyone who knows the area, as to what they think of the area and how they think some frozen Vermonters might get along there. I'm a self employed illustrator and publisher who I'm not worried about work and my wife is a part-time veterinarian. I'm assuming she wouldn't have too hard a time finding some relief work or part time employment. And we homeschool our daugther. So we can live pretty independent as far as work and school go. But what about the area in general? How will some southern loving yankees might get along there?

Hi, My husband, son and I live about 45min.-1 hour from Gate City and Lebanon. The Clinch River Valley is some lovely land. I would think the people there would be friendly, like they are here. The weather is good most of the time, with not a lot of snow. The coldest it's been at night so far this winter is around 12. It's suppose to be around 42 today. We're having warmer weather this winter than usual and less snow. I've never been to Vermont, so I don't know how it would compare, but I love these mountains. Hopefully someone who knows more about the area your'e interested in will come along soon. God Bless You, Pamela

Thanks, Pamela-He has, many times over!
I think we'll make 20 today and the coldest we've been is -12 with more below zero coming this week! The mountains in Vermont are very beautiful too, it's our culture that's changing for the worse. I use to think of this, (the north east of vermont) as frozen applalachia but not anymore. And I don't mean the weather. Thanks for writing!

If you don't mind saying, what town will you be moving to? What books do you use for Homeschooling? I'd actually like to move...possibly to Alaska, but my husband isn't interested in that. I think he likes the modern conveniences too much to give them up right now. Maybe in a few years. We have almost 6 acres of nice land, but a subdivision is now building lots of homes besides of us. They're nice homes, between 125,000.00-150,000.00 probably, which is nice for this area. We just enjoy our privacy and we seem to be losing it. It's making me restless. Enough of that.

Best of luck with you upcoming move and God Bless You,

Pamela

The property that I"m thinking about is in Russell co, it's 25 acres, I assume it must be within some towns boundry but I'm not sure which. We'll go to look at it in the spring.
As for homeschooling we don't use a set curriculum but lots of different books. Curriculums look too much like public school to me. Though it's off topic--everybody who can, should homeschool-you'll learn to love your kids even more!
If I read you right, you'd move to gain your privicy? Can't you keep it in SW Va? Where abouts do you live now? One of the reasons that I'm interested in SW Va rather than TN or NC is that it seems less likley to grow in the near future. It seems to be growing less at present. Yes?
I don't need much in the way of conveniences but I'm not sure I'd want to move all the way up to Alaska either. Good luck and God bless!
