Actually, they can take your tax refund if you owe, but normally, they will not let you register or renew your vehicle registration until it is paid.

Hey Virginia folks, is the "car tax" still going on there?

Thanks!

It is but up to %75 is subtracted so the bill probally won't amount to much on a used car.

Costs to administer and collect the car tax? $45.89
But those folks have mortgages to pay too. Right?

I realize this is an old thread. But I am trying to get some background and information on Virginia's personal property tax (PPT) for artists. I am a jeweler. So, do I have to pay a PPT every year for all of my jewelry equipment?!

How could that ever be the case? Property tax is based on your real estate, cars, trucks or boats.

Actually PPT can be levied against equipment that is used in a business, the value and tax rate will vary based on the community you live in. The following is from Henrico County https://henrico.us/finance/business/businessmisctaxes/ scroll down to "Business Tangible Personal Property"

Check your locations web page for specific information..

Smith33, are you a jeweler located in Virginia and you're operating as a jeweler for profit (i.e., in business as a jeweler)? If so, yes, you will owe personal property tax each year on your business equipment. I am assuming you are filing a Schedule C. The tax is based on "depreciated" value over time. So each year, as the equipment becomes older, its value is lease and in turn your personal property tax on that piece of equipment is less.
