I am looking to move just around the border area of Virginia or north carolina. I have not seen anyone talk about which state has worse taxes when it comes to property, income, sales, and personal property.

I have seen that virginia has a lower sales tax rate than nc. But north carolina has lower income tax reductions for property taxes.

I have no idea about things like car inspections, what they include or if needed. Emissions or not? Cost to put license plates on a car. I noticed NC has like 5 cents more tax on gas. But does it have better roads so it costs less for front end and suspension parts?

The sad truth is I am disabled. Have a lower income because of it. So income tax is not very relevant for me. But other things like property and sales tax could make a big difference. I just bought a nice shiny new 11 year old car. I expect to always have older vehicles like that. Does nc charge you for a junk car sitting in a field like va does? Sometimes parts cars come in handy. But not if you have to pay a lot to let them sit for the day you need something from them.

Are the V.A. hospitals ( and clinics) better in one state or the other?

One advantage I would see to living in nc would be to buy stuff in va and pay lower taxes just across the border on gas and stuff. Is there an advantage to staying in va and going to nc for things? Or are costs close enough in reality it does not make any difference?

I have considered Danville, Hillsville,Saltville,Stephens City, and Tazewell as they all have V.A. clinics in them.

Franklin and Suffolk are also possibilities.

I am looking to buy where I can get a few acres and grow some zone -7 plants (for my own use) like tarragon and sweet cicily. I like both of those.

I would like to be closer to (but not even close to being on) the ocean, but realize land is to expensive there, at least for now.

Do different counties in the state change tax implications a lot?
If so which should be avoided to be affordable?
