Right now, I live in southeastern VA. I've been looking for a place to move some time next year far enough away to make me feel like I'm not associated with this area anymore but close enough that I can visit my family regularly. I've been looking for places in PA but I really love the DC area. However, I do NOT want to live in DC or it's immediate suburbs. With so many places to pick from, I'm having a really hard time deciding.

-Where you are working: Right now, I have no job prospects anywhere except where I already work and have no clue what the job market is like anywhere else in VA. I know I need to research it.

-How much you are willing to spend on housing: I plan on renting

-How long of a commute you're willing to tolerate: 30 minutes and under

-If you have kids: Private school or public school? I do not have kids

-What type of neighborhood environment you are looking for: Something safe with people who won't be in my business.

-Community amenities important to you: Arts
-Pie or cake? Both!

I am into the arts and want to be somewhere that has some kind of happening appeal to it. I also want to be somewhere where traffic isn't awful like DC but is within reasonable time frame from DC (you know, a couple hours at the most). I guess I'm basically looking for something outside of the DC suburbs like Winchester or something but I am really unfamiliar with the smaller towns in northern VA. I don't want to be in a stuffy, boring area.

Am I looking for utopia? I'm not sure if my desires can be met in VA..

Thanks for any info!

Roanoke has an interesting little art scene going on. I know some of the gallery's and studio spaces have closed recently but there were several shared spaces downtown that were interesting to visit. It's a very affordable place to live as well.

I would look into Richmond or Charlottesville. Both within a couple hours of DC and they have their own feel, as in, not part of another area. Both are on I-64, so it would make getting back to SE Va easy.
