"Fries" VA? No such place to my knowledge. Could you mean "Dumfries"? That's outer DC suburbs, very near Quantico, so it's full of pawn shops, used car lots, and strip malls. Not the most attractive place from the main roads but there may be nicer parts off the beaten path.

Fries, Virginia is a small community in Carroll County. (I know this and I don't even live in Virginia).

It is probably best known as a stopover spur trail on the New River Bike Trail for those riding from Galax to Pulaski.

To the original poster, can't tell you much more about it other than it seems very quaint and quiet. Good luck!

Fries VA is pronounced 'Freeze'.

Fries is in Southwestern Virginia right on the New River. The town of Fries has couple of diners, a couple gas station/convenience stores, and a newer Dollar General Store.

Galax is about 10 minutes away. There you will find a large Walmart, Lowes, hospital, nice library, several restaurants, and some smaller shops.

Winston-Salem NC is about 1 hour and 15 minutes away and you can reach Roanoke VA in about an hour and a half.

Nice little community. I dated a girl from there (many years ago) when I was in college.

Right on the river, surrounded by rolling hills. Very scenic.

Definately out-in-the-country.

We used to go to revivals there when I was a kid. Old Brother Carpenter was quite a preacher.

VALover is right, spelled Fries" but pronounced "Freeze".

I just drove through it a few days ago.

Actually, it is in Grayson County. It seemed like a nice little town and, of course, it's part of the Blue Ridge area. One thing I can say for sure is that area of Virginia is absolutely lovely and one couldn't go wrong living within a 50 mile radius of Galax north, west, or east for the beauty and wonderful weather.

I was corrected very quickly when I said Fries (like French fries) and when I said Gal-ax, I was giggled at and was corrected. It is Gay-lax.
