My husband has a job offer in the Lanham/Woodmore area. Neither of us know anything about Maryland so its been difficult trying to figure out what towns/cities and communities are where and how far they are. We are relocating from NYC and are both in our early 20's. We're tyring to find an apartment since we definitely cant afford a house down there. Does anyone have any recommendations on what areas we should look into? or what areas to avoid?

Have you thought about renting a house? I'm not too sure there are any nice apartment complexes in/around Lanham, but there are some nice subdivisions with homes/townhomes. You might try Laurel, Columbia, Upper Marlborough for housing rental. Try Bowie for apartments.

Woodmore's claim to fame is that it is the wealthiest black majority community in the entire country. If you are not African American it is not a problem because the area still has a fairly substantial white population, particularly the further out you go on US 301 toward Anne Arundel County which is where the state capital (Annapolis) is located.
You shouldn't have any problems in that immediate area (I guess unless you don't want to live in a black majority community, it happens). The major issue is income. While Prince George's County (where Woodmore/Lanham is located) is the wealthiest black majority county in the U.S., as you get inside the beltway (I-495) it is still a majority black but very low income. Although it is "suburban" all of the urban "problems" you can think of are there (crime, poor schools, overcrowding, poor infrastructure, etc.)
As you move further out in Prince George's County away from Woodmore their are just more and more single-family homes. You have already indicated you cannot afford to buy so I am assuming you are familiar with your upcoming income level. Bowie does have some rentals but is not particularly cheap. For affordability (and safety) you may have to look as far away as Waldorf but it is 30-45 minute commute and you will have to drive as the Metro doesn't extend into that county. Only Prince George's and Montgomery Counties (in MD) have access to the DC metropolitan transportation network.

I'm not sure if Woodmore/Mitcheville area have apartments. You may be able to found a townhouse for rent. You can find affordable apartments in Lanham. You may want to check out Largo. You also can check out College Park or Silver Spring. How much are you willing to pay in rent?? Do you need to be near walking distance of a metro station?

There is an apartment tower in the Lake Arbor (Mitchellville) area. I haven't heard anything bad about it, although it may be pricey.
