We are planning a summer 2011 move to the DC area and have zero'ed in on the area around downtown Bethesda as a place to live.

We are a small family (couple, 10-year old, dog) wanting to live within a mile of downtown Bethesda in a small (1500sf or so) single family house.

Is there any real differences in living in the town of Bethesda or the town of Chevy Chase? I understand the middle schools are different, but other than that, what are the other pros and cons?

Chevy Chase is way more expensive.

Are you planning on renting or buying? Public school or private for your 10yr old? I agree that the price tag (housing/school) is going to be the driving factor in your decision. IMHO Chevy Chase is more 'old' money and Bethesda is more funky.

Would like to buy. Want to send the 10 yr old to public school. Would like a kid-friendly community where families make connections.

Default Bethesda and Chevy Chase

Lucky you ! Most people would kill to have a choice between those two communities. I think I saw that someone noted that Chevy Chase is a bit more 'old money' that Bethesda. I agree. Keep in mind that Chevy Chase actually refers to two communities - Chevy Chase D.C., and Chevy Chase Maryland. The CC in the District simply grew over the line into Maryland way back, and remains one of the priciest communities in the District. Bethesda caters much more to well to do younger couples. There is an incredible number of excellent restaurants in downtown Bethesda, and some fun pubs - Blacks is great. In any case, the schools in Montgomery County are among the best in the country and you get them in either community (in Maryland). It may be that the school system kept the older Chevy Chase Community in D.C., and the younger moved out to Chevy Chase Maryland for the schools. Either CC or Beth. are great though. And you have the great advantage of walking to the red line for a 25 minute ride into the city. Lucky you !

Thanks for the thoughts. Will be moving from a close-in suburb of San Francisco so we want the access to the City while maintaining the school and park benefits of a suburb. Now let's hope we can find a house we like for a price we can afford!
