Looking for a place to stay in this area for a family of three including a 3 year old. Looking for a quiet and safe neighbourhood. Apartments are OK, but safety is a big priority. Looking at a rent of around $1500. Prefer townhouse or SFH, if that is not too much to ask.

How about neighbouring areas such as Greenbelt, Columbia etc? Any pointer is appreciated.

If you choose Silver Spring or Columbia, you'll be looking at a 2 bedroom apartment for that price. You won't find any TH or SFH to rent for $1500 in those areas. Your best bet is Adelphi (right behind the FDA campus), Beltsville, Laurel, and Hyattsville. Though you'll take a hit in school quality, you can certainly get closer to renting a TH or SFH for $1500 in those areas.

Thank you for the reply to my post.

What are the nice areas in Silver Spring? Some people tell me that there are some ghettos, so dont want to go near it. If I were to look at small TH and SFH in some reasonably good neighbourhoods in Silver Spring how much should I expect to shell out in rentals?

Also, what are some of the good apartments in Silver Spring?

When I searched homes database, i did find some SFH in silverspring in the 1500 range. I am not sure if it is a desirable area. For example look at 3115 MEDWAY ST, SILVER SPRING, MD 20902 when i looked for rentals in silver spring with more than 2 bedrooms. How is the 20902, 20904, 20906 areas in silver spring? There seem to be a lot of condos and apartments in the area.. appreciate any inputs

The 20904 area has a lot of single family homes. Many of these are on wooded lots with large backyards for children. Martin Luther King Park is a beautiful area with playgrounds, bike paths, swimming pools and other child friendly activities. Colesville is a beautiful and safe area.
