Well, if you're really not in a hurry . . .

Take Route 29 all the way down through Virginia -- through Charlottesville, Lynchburg, to Greensboro NC. Then pick up Route 40 west and keep going. You'll pass through all kinds of rural areas of Virginia. Then you'll have a bit of interstate to pass through the cities of Greensboro, Winston-Salem, but then you'd be on your way to Asheville in the gorgeous mountains of NC and then into the Smokey Mountains of TN.

It would certainly be scenic but it would be a long, slow drive.

For faster and still fairly scenic, take I-66 west to I-81 south to I-40 west. You'll still see plenty of rural, scenic areas with lots of mountains. But you'd have typical interstate traffic -- lots of big trucks and high speeds.

Not sure about which road would be the most scenic to New Orleans.

Have fun!

What time of year?

I'll second US29 but add that it parallels the Blue Ridge Parkway
which is the road to see when the weather is nicer and warmer.

The Parkway (with or without the Skyline Drive section) empties out into the Pigeon Forge Area...
(all of this takes you through Maryland, DC, Virginia and North Carolina)

If you can handle the species known as Trustafarian and/or just like a fun town...
then a side trip into Asheville NC is worth planning an en over night stop for.

from there you can go through Deals Gap and the Cherohala Skyway all past the TN border.
At this point though you'll probably need some rest.
Knoxville will do well for that.

Then it's all Interstate 40 to Nashville.
If you still have time take a couple of side trips to anywhere and it'll be worth it.

Get the $8us Road Atlas at WalMart before you leave town.
Oh, and have fun!
