Here is the data from the 2010 census for SUBURBAN dc. I put this together a couple days ago. This post is both to illustrate the new trends forming in the demographics of suburban dc, and to formally document the difference in demographics between the maryland and the virginia suburbs.

Racially/Ethnically Diverse Suburban Areas
*This thread is for anyone who posts on here looking for a "diverse" suburban locale*

Since the 2010 census data for both Maryland and Virginia were released, I've been meaning to put together a demographic summary of the DC suburbs. Unfortunately, I didn't get around to it until today.

First, the numbers and then the methodology.
Numbers (note this ONLY includes the one-race population and does not account for those of mixed-race)
Total suburban population: 4,534,493
Racial distribution of total suburban population by percentages: 47.8 non-hispanic white, 23.2% black, 15.1% hispanic, and 10.7% asian

Racial distribution of total suburban population by numbers: 2,167,018 non-hispanic whites; 1,051,820 blacks; 683,745 hispanics; 484,049 asians

Suburban Virginia population: 2,230,623
Racial distribution of suburban Virginia population by percentages: 55.4% non-hispanic white, 11.3% black, 16.3% hispanic, and 13.5% asian
Racial distribution of suburban Virginia population by numbers: 1,236,055 non-hispanic whites; 251,621 blacks; 354,158 hispanics; 300,066 asians

Suburban Maryland population: 2,303,870
Racial distribution of suburban Maryland population by percentages: 40.4% non-hispanic white, 34.7% black, 13.9% hispanic, and 8.0% asian
Racial distribution of suburban Maryland population by numbers: 930,963 whites; 800,200 blacks; 319,586 hispanics; 183,974 asians

Interesting items to note:the suburban populations are nearly very even (which is one reason why the DC metro area is in a very unique situation, in that it consists of a union territory surround by suburbs lying in two separate states whose suburban portions are almost identical in population, but very different demographically); almost 80% of the suburban black population resides in the Maryland suburbs; the suburban hispanic population is nearly evenly split between the states, with the edge going to Virginia; nearly 2/3 of the suburban asian population resides in the Virginia suburbs
Methodology
All data were obtained from Map: Explore the 2010 census | The Washington Post. I include the following suburban (that is jurisdictions in Maryland and Virginia, and not the District itself) county-level jurisdictions in my calculations*:

1) Those that lie entirely inside the beltway (Arlington County and the independent cities of Alexandria and Falls Church)

2) Those that lie partially within the beltway (Montgomery, Fairfax and Prince George's counties)

3) Those that border county-level jurisdictions that lie partially inside the beltway-provided are members of another metropolitan statistical area (Frederick, Calvert, Charles, Loudoun and Prince William counties)

4) Those that lie within any of the aforementioned county-level jurisdictions (The independent cities of Fairfax, Manassas and Manassas Park)

*The independent cities of Falls Church, Fairfax, Manassas, Manassas Park, and Alexandria are treated as counties for the purpose of this data.

Interesting items to note: even though the definitions above allow for a "fair" assessment of metropolitan demographics, be aware that the Virginia suburbs lie in a MUCH smaller geographical area; this is due to the outer suburban jurisdictions of Loudoun and Prince William counties being far more heavily urbanized than their Maryland counterparts in Frederick, Charles and Calvert counties

This is part two of my OP. It lists 14 suburbs in MD and 14 suburbs in VA that I believe to be racially and ethnically diverse. For anyone who'll ask, I do not address diversity of thought or opinion because these items are too difficult to measure. This post is primarily to benefit those searching for diverse suburbs and even moreso those looking for presence of any particular minority within the larger context of a racially diverse locale.

*The following are a handful of the most diverse suburban towns, cities, and census-designated places in the DC metro area listed with their populations, racial distributions, percentages of foreign-born residents, and year(s) during which data were obtained. The 28 suburbs of DC listed above collectively house 939,897 residents. Hopefully, this indicates that there are A LOT of towns/cities/CDPs in the metro area that cater to individuals and families looking for an international and racial diverse population. I may even go as far and claim that DC and San Francisco/San Jose have BY FAR the most diverse collection of suburbs of any United States metro area.

In my 60 years here, I've never heard of "Jefferson, Virginia" -- but I'm guessing that it means the neighborhood around the Jefferson Village complex, in between "7 Corners" (to the east) and the Beltway (to the west).

Yep. In that list, I think "Jefferson" is basically the 22042 zip code in Fairfax County (with a Falls Church mailing address) and that "Bailey's Crossroads" and "Seven Corners" are the 22041 and 22044 zip codes (again with Falls Church mailing addresses, though outside the City of Falls Church).
