Jeeze Louise...can't even take the dog out for a walk for 5 minutes without being swarmed by gnats- morning, noon and night. Is this a common problem in Maryland? or am I just lucky?
Other than covering myself head to toe with OFF, has anyone found a way to repel the annoying buggers?

Get a hat, spray the hat with OFF, wear the hat on your head. The swarm will at least stay away from your face.

While playing softball yesterday eve the gnats were actually landing on my glasses and biting my forehead. I used some OFF and it helped against the biting but they were unusually aggressive. What a pain.

I don't know if this works... but might be worth a try... I heard that keeping a dryer sheet with you helps keep them away.... along with mosquito's... who knows?

I'm like you though... they will get me... over everyone else in a group of people... so annoying.

i really don't understand maryland gnats - all they do is try to fly up your nose/ into your ears, rather than bite you.

the ones i'm used to in the western states will drain you of most of your blood supply.

You have this problem everywhere in Maryland? You want government to intervene. Doing what? Massive spraying of insecticides? How often? You will have plenty of opposition to that, based on concerns of cost and health, unless perhaps you can show that the gnats transmit diseases (like mosquitoes and West Nile Virus). I lived in two different parts of Silver Spring and had no big problems with gnats, but I'm sure it varies widely by area and season. Tried contacting the USDA, maybe the extension service or APHIS (Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service) to see what might help (and how long the problem might last, assuming it's seasonal)? Doesn't the Washington Post have a garden editor? You can find lots of hints online.
