I ask because I'm considering moving there schools wouldn't matter as my middle schooler goes to private school near my job (Bethesda).

To others reading I'm also considering Burtonsville and Laurel. Thoughts?
I moved from Gaithersburg to Laurel 15 years ago and don't regret it. No kids involved.

It has its plusses and minuses.

Minuses:I wouldn't like to have to use Laurel Hospital. Know someone whose family was basically told she'll likely die, got transferred to GW and made a full recovery.

You mostly have to travel to Columbia or Annapolis for good restaurants and shopping. I force myself to the mall once a year, whether I need to go or not.

Plusses: Slower pace, and a lottttt less traffic.

I moved to Laurel a couple months ago from Montgomery County. I really like it. No kids, so I don't have to worry about schools. I have found some good restaurants (the Thai at Laurel in the Laurel Town Center is particularly good). Lots of the neighborhoods are very pretty. The town has all the amenities I need, though I do go over to the Wegmans in Columbia for groceries, because Wegmans is my favorite grocery chain in the area. My house is very close to the exit for 95 and the toll road so commuting to work is a dream. Housing is much more affordable than anywhere I looked at in Montgomery County.

If you like Indian, try Curry Leaf, strip mall opposite Safeway. First Watch in the Town Center is good for breakfast and lunch. Also, Bon Fresco, 7am-3pm, Mon-Fri only, in the ASRC office building on Muirkirk Meadows Rd.

WaPo recognized Beltsville as one of the best localities in the metro area for cheap eats, and profiled ten rests along R.1.

I do like Indian food and I've been meaning to try the Curry Leaf restaurant. I just ordered some things from a hybrid Indian/Italian restaurant called Bella. Everything was great. I'm not a big fan of Italian, so I'll probably stick with the Indian menu options. I'll try the other restaurants you mentioned. I saw the WaPo article about the Beltsville restaurant options. I've been meaning to go check some of those out, too.

Overall, so far as Laurel is concerned, I think that it covers such a large area that it's hard to generalize. There are some run down areas. There are some swanky areas. Mainly it just seems like a quiet lot of suburbs.

Whose to say when you have kids in the future that the schools won't be better by then. No need to buy a home anywhere if you hope the schools will do better or worse. After all you don't actually go to school.... your children do and that technically wont be until kindergarten. Plan proactively and try to invest in real estate which has an upside. Buying a home in Montgomery County with great schools could be a horrible choice as though you're probably going to pay over 600000 for a 1600sqft which your kids can't attend until 5 years later. Food for thought. #Dishwasher

I live in Capitol Heights. Its absolutely no way I would drive from MO county to DC everyday. 2 hours commutes are for the birds literally. Capitol Heights has a bad rap because of the adjacent southeast dc area. Robbery is a huge problem. But not as much as getting robbed of my time commuting from so far away. Also the prices in Mo county are absurd. Once again getting robbed. Id rather get robbed once a year then robbed every 1st of the month for paying a higher mortgage. Just saying...

There are other places to live close to DC, in PG for a close commute -- than Capital Heights. But if that's where you like to live that's good for you.
