I had forgotten, but you could also go from the MARC train to the DC Metro subway, and it's one stop to Gallaudet and a few block's walk. The neighborhood around Gallaudet is a bit rough, and you might look into whether you could bring a bike on the train, or whether GU provides a shuttlebus to the Metro stop. Hmm...more options than I realized.

Even with that map, I can only repeat my original post with your best options being towards southern md or very northern Virginia.

For others' benefit, Galluadet University does run a shuttle from Union Station and the New York Avenue Metro stop. So, it would be feasible to take the Brunswick Line MARC train from Harpers Ferry, WV. Harpers Ferry is a nice scenic town. The OP might check out the WV forums for other people making the commute, and see whether it's feasible. It would also be possible to take a Virginia Railway Express (VRE) train in from Manassas or as far south as Fredericksburg.

The area around Gallaudet, on the side near the Metro stop (M St.) is not too "rough" anymore. In answer to the OP's question, Poolesville would fit, but it isn't 30 minutes from Gallaudet. There is public transport from there to the Red Line Metro, whicd takes you to New York Ave station, and a 10 minute walk up M st to Gallaudet. There's also the area east of Olney, along highway 108 that has a rural feel. That too, is more than 30 minutes from Gally. You can get from there to the red Line at Glenmont. I'm aslo thinking of the area near Laurel (Scaggsville?) that feels really rural. If you're in the right part of Beltsville, it can feel rural, but that is a false feel. I had a friend who lived out beyond Upper Marlboro in a very rural area, too. All of these are way beyond 30 minutes to Gally, though.

In Fulton, along Route 216 (Scaggsville Road) there are still dairy farms. But also high-priced townhouses. There might be some rental houses among the older houses. One could drive down 29, catch a bus at the Park-and-Ride at the corner of 198, and go to the Silver Spring (Red Line) Metro.

How much are you trying to spend on transportation? It sounds easy but transportation options in this area are very expensive. I live 6 miles from my job in Silver Spring and couldn't find any combination of transportation that wouldn't cost me less than $5 to go 6 miles! MARC is going to cost you, Metro isn't so cheap anymore, especially since they added "peak-of-peak" rates. My wife and I live in Adelphi, MD and she works downtown. We live between two Metro stations. It's actually cheaper for her to drive than to catch the Metro!

Wow, she must have free parking downtown if its cheaper for her to drive. Working downtown normally carries over $200 of parking rates a month.
