How would Rockville vary from Fairfax County locations - i.e. Annandale, Springfield, Fairfax, etc.?

They're both equal distance to DC, plus both have higher Asian populations than other areas around DC.

Anything that would distinguish the two otherwise?

Better Metro access in Rockville than in Annandale or Fairfax.

Better Chinese restaurants in Rockville; better Korean/Vietnamese restaurants in Fairfax.

Schools are about the same.

County government activity is mostly centered in Rockville. But I guess the same could be said in Fairfax.

Better shopping (in general) in Fairfax.
(For example, you can get your two buck Chuck at Trader Joes in Fairfax; better selection of clothing, etc..)

Better metro access in Rockville.

Worse traffic in Fairfax. Even on the weekends.

You're talking about Fairfax City, not county, right?

Rockville has just about every store one could want. Except, perhaps, for Trader Joes, which is right next door in Gaithersburg.

How about prices? Is Rockville slightly more affordable? Or same higher prices for rent/housing/etc.?

No, talking about Fairfax County. Rockville does have all the stores I would ever want, but many of the things and/or sizes I would want are not there / sold out. I end up ordering from the web.

Rockville DOES have a Trader Joe's (so do Silver Spring and Gaithersburg), but they are not stocked like the ones in Fairfax and I usually can not find some of the merchandise I went for. Not a problem when I go to VA. The MD TJ stores also don't sell wine /beer.

Not important enough to make me want to commute from VA, but just a minor annoyance / difference I never expected when I moved to MD so I thought it was important enough to list for the original poster.

I had no idea that there was a new Trader Joe's in Rockville. Where is it?

It's kind of weird to compare Rockville, a city, to Fairfax County. That's how I got confused. Comparing it to specific areas, though, makes sense. I guess when comparing it to Springfield or Annandale or Fairfax, Rockville comes off pretty good. I like that it is an actual city, and has 3 Metro stops (and a 4th close by). The Metro is a big reason I like Rockville.
