If I were to live in Silver Springs and commute to Rockville how bad would the commute be? What would the estimates for rush hour/non-rush hour. Is it advisable, or too far?

I did and it gave me a generic number from a random in Silver Springs. That doesnt really give me an idea of traffic patterns throughout the day and other peoples experiences with the drive.

If you have anything useful to add from experience I would love to hear it. If you want to point out google.com please dont reply. Why dont we just remove the forum section and redirect them to google?

So, has anyone regularly made this commute?

First off (And not to be a jerk, just helping you get settled into the area) its Silver Spring, not Silver Springs, no plural needed.

Second, it really isnt a bad commute at all. I do it every once in a while to drop off or pick up my wife. It really depends on where in Rockville you are coming from. Taking Veirs Mill to Georgia Ave could be an option if you live by there, or hooking up with 185 south may be the best option. Basically if you have to backtrack to get on 270 - don't. Just take the side streets. Usually it gets backed up about two or so miles before the exit but it goes quicker than you think. My advice is to get used to which lane you need to be in (Don't wanna be THAT guy trying to switch every 100 feet), look for the speed cameras and for GOD SAKES GO THE SPEED LIMIT. It frustrates me when I am in a 35 zone with someone going 20 or 25 in front of me.

In short, pick the route with the shortest distance. All the shortcuts have been figured out around here.

Quick question.

How long does it take you?

Also, I am afraid that I will be that guy, at least for a little while. Ive lived in Austin so im used to bad traffic, but DC can be confusing.

I can only speak for non-rush hour at 10am in the morning. Dropping off my dad at work in downtown Silver Spring to Rockville (Montgomery College) is about a 1/2hr drive using the beltway and 270.

One reason for the google suggestion is that you said from "Silver Spring". The problem with that is that the designation covers a huge area. Which part of Silver Spring? Are we supposed to assume that whenever a poster says, "Silver Spring" that they mean downtown Silver Spring. the answer to your question varies, depending on where in that area you start from.

IDK.

I havent ever been to the area and it is somewhere to consider. I actually did the google map search last weekend and it said 26 minutes. That doesnt really factor in traffic, and other factors that that could delay me.

If it was downtown Silver Spring then that seems right. With traffic you would add 15-30 minutes. The main slowdown is 495. Once you get to 270, the rest of the commute is easy. That's the best I can say without knowing where in SS you're starting from.

Im going to focus on rockville and North Bethesda because it seems like Silver Spring is a 25-60 minute commute. More than I want to spend every day.
