My husband had just been relocated to Gaithersburg, and I am and RN-BSN, so I am sure I am not going to have problem finding a job. We were very excited until I started reading some of the posting. My questions is we live in a very conservative (not to say racist) part of South Carolina. We are both professionals, but my kids and I had problems in the past due to racism especially in school. We have to put them in private school and were hoping that we were not going to have to deal with those issues there. We are Hispanics, and I have got the idea after reading some of the relocating post that people have “issues” with Hispanics in the area. I was hoping that the area was a bit more diverse and liberal, but now I am worried that is not going to be a big difference from SC. What do you think?

I don't think it's an issue at all. If you are professionals, why would you have a problem? I think most issues people have with hispanics or blacks or whites is when you get into the lower ends of the economic spectrum and issues like maintaining property, crime and social issues start to become a problem.

Most of the negative comments you read on here are people that live way outside of Gaithersburg city limits. People that live in the country if you will. The city limits are some of the most diverse places in the nation. The schools such as Gaithersburg High School or Watkins Mill High School are over 80% minority to put it into perspective for you. That includes high Black, Hispanic, and Asian population's. Gaithersburg has every race represented! You will never get rid of the people who live way out in the sticks afraid to mingle with minorities. They exist in every state. When you move here, you will see those people are out numbered 20,000 to 1. The D.C. area is nothing like South Carolina so a comparison isn't even feasible on racial acceptance. We really don't have racial issues here besides internet geeks who like to complain on message boards. They wouldn't ever voice that opinion in public.

I really think this is so true. Coming from the midwest, the DC area is so much better. That's why I laugh at all the PG County remarks. We shop and dine in PG county all the time and really like Bowie even though its mostly black. Bowie is one of my favorites suburbs in DC because it is so diverse, yet still very nice and the people are so nice regardless of race. It was the same way when I lived in Germantown which I think is also pretty diverse, but I don't know the stats. Diverse compared to most new midwestern suburbs for sure.

OP I don't think you or your children will have any problem blending in that area because in contrast, there are many Hispanics living there. Like others mentioned it is quite diverse and there really hasn't been any "issues" in terms of racial tensions.

This is veering off-topic, but I'm only 10 years out of high school, and my sense then was that Wootton aside, there wasn't really any school with that many Asians. RM and Churchill might have a little more than usual.

Worry more about getting a job. With so many Hispanics around, you are like a drop in a bucket. People have issues, more or less, with others everywhere. Obviously a high number of illegal immigrants has given a bad name to Hispanic community.

Yes, Wooton does have the most Asians but from a diversity perspective, Gaithersburg City schools lead the way with the most diversity. The only school in the county that can compare to Gaithersburg schools would be Blair in Silver Spring but that is it.
