Hello All,

Can anyone provide me with info about the Longmead crossing community near Layhill Rd. in Silver Spring/Aspen Hill. There seem to be some nice town homes with great access to ICC and metro stations. I'm looking for feedback mostly in terms of SAFETY and quality of life (nearby stores, traffic, commuting, etc.)

How would you compare this area to Colesville? They seem to border each other, and Colesville is another area I've been looking, particularly in Stonegate and Sherwood Forrest.

Thanks for any help!

Longmead is pretty nice; very close to ICC--in fact so close you will want to come by to see whatever house you are interested in during rush hours (around 4:30-6:00) and see what the noise is like. We don't usually hear any in our house, but I do hear it when going for a walk around that time. They've put in a nicely landscaped bike/walking path near the ICC--which a lot of folks are using. Otherwise a very quiet area. Lots of diversity; lots of older Chinese residents in our area.

Safety: when we first started renting a couple of years ago, there was an outbreak of break-ins and some robberies. The HOA hired a private security company to patrol and it has been substantially safer since then. When I check crime websites I can sometimes see the outline of Longmead and the nearby LeisureWorld (retirement living) because those are the spots with little to no crime. You would want to do some research.

I really don't know how it would compare to Colesville crime wise; I think Longmead is safer than other areas nearby which don't hire security companies.

But--the Bre Pre road corridor is not that great; lots of crime near the lower priced apartments; shopping is not that great in general, but I am not impressed with the area near Colesville either. I mostly shop in Olney and Rockville, and bypass more local options in Aspen Hill; 2 new grocery stores were just built in Olney and are having price wars. CVS transfered their 24 hour pharmacy to Olney, after the one off Bel Pre was robbed several times. The Giant near LeisureWorld has a good selection; you will see lots of elderly in the area.

Not impressed with the restaurant selection in either place; near Longmead, the places that don't cater to retirees are pretty good--like some of the nearby south american chicken places, and a newish indian place at the corner of Norbeck and Georgia.

A bus comes through the area and goes to Glenmont metro; it is a longish ride (I have used it) but very convenient.

I used Realtor.com, and the closest one meeting your specifications is $2100/month. It is on Amherst Avenue in walking distance to Metro, rather than Layhill Crossing specifically. You might find another in Silver Spring or Wheaton for as low as $1900.
