My husband is looking at a job in Gaithersburg and we are not familiar with the area at all. We currently live in Central MA and want a similar feel - ie. not a development, open space and excellent schools. Which town should we focus on in looking for a place to live?
Thanks!

Koko

If the job is near either of the MARC stations (Gaithersburg and Metropolitan Grove), I would look near Point of Rocks and Dickerson. Still quiet and rural, plus a train commute to work.

Then the husband would drive to work. There are plenty of small towns like Comus, Beallsville, Hyattstown which are currently lightly developed, but still in Montgomery County. However, in 20 years, the development will probably take over.

Schools are generally good, but you could check them individually on greatschools.com .

Most of those are in the county's agricultural preserve, so they should be safe from overdevelopment. Also look at Poolesville. certain parts of darnestown.

Good suggestion. I did not know about the agricultural preserve. The last time I was out to Poolesville, they were developing farmland along Rt 107. But the pockets with older homes are still rural.

Another one for Poolesville. Montgomery County is heavily zoned and will be for sometime. Though there could be some development popping up but it won't be anything like Bethesda or Rockville.

Default Where did you end up?

I'm asking because I, too, hail from Central MA. We are looking to move to the DC area next summer and I really want a rural feel.
