Oh good, because my understanding was that the proposed funding was a 30-40% hike in property taxes.

There is already 3 different bus routes going through 270 during rush hour. Couldn't they just reroute the buses?

A quote from the article:

Quote:
O’Malley’s decision all but ends years of debate about whether the so-called Corridor Cities Transitway, or CCT, should be operated by bus or more expensive light rail.
I thought they were going to build both?

You might be thinking of the purple light rail line. The 270 corridor now will be BRT (bad idea IMO), but Maryland has the purple line (PG and Montgomery counties) and the new Red line Light Rail in Baltimore to fund, so the 270 corridor will get buses for now.

Not a bad idea if it is a temporary solution while the state has to fund two light rail projects that haven't even broken ground yet. In other words, it is better than nothing at all. Anything to get cars off the roads is a good thing.

No, I was thinking of the CCT - Corridor Cities Transitway, not the "Purple Line". The CCT was to run from Shady Grove Metro thru "Science City" and the Kentlands on up to Clarksburg. The article seems to suggest that is now dead. I think that may be an error in the article, but wonder if anyone knows for sure?

Yea, that's what I was trying to say. BRT is not great, but Maryland has its hands full with other LRT projects that are much further along.

Gotcha. This is the same corridor and it follows the same basic path that the LRT was to follow (through Science City etc) only now it will be buses. It will still be in its own right of way though and will use BRT buses and have stations like light rail. The idea is that someday it will be upgraded to LRT. One reason they went with BRT (other than price) is because it could be open in a 3-5 years rather than 6-15.

Montgomery Counties BRT will be just like light rail.

I see. Thanks for clarifying. I had trouble figuring out which project they were talking about.
