So we won't hijack another thread I have decided to make one about PG Plaza and how store makeup seems to be an indication about how the rest of a city is perceived.

For starters, given the demographics of Hyattsville, what stores do you think should be in PG plaza mall? What would you get rid of? What would you keep?

Here is the current list:

I'm going to show you the stores that tend to attract the teenage crowds. I will compare it to Bowie Town Center to give you some perspective of what some of us is saying.

That's pretty much more than half of the mall and that's just the stores that I know about. It just comes off as the typical PG County Mall. It really doesn't offer anything unique that you couldn't get from any other mall that we have had in this county (unfortunately most of them are gone now).

See the difference? Bowie Town Center runs circles around Mall at PG, Iverson, Forestville and the Blvd

The problem with what the OP is stating (or at least how I am interpreting his commentary and I could be totally wrong) is that the OP seems to be thinking with this smaller-minded mentality that P.G. Plaza is somehow just a local, "Hyattsville" shopping center. You can go by P.G. Plaza on any afternoon or evening, and it looks like Black Friday or the day after Thanksgiving or the day after Christmas. Clearly, all of those people aren't coming from little ol' Hyattsville. People travel near and far, from all over PGC, to go to P.G. Plaza. A lot of them also come from DC, considering the mall basically has its own metro station. So, if P.G. Plaza was just a little strip mall catering to Hyattsville, I would have to agree that its store selection was mostly on-par with what they should offer. However, P.G. Plaza isn't that. Sadly, P.G. Plaza is basically THE best mall that P.G. County currently has. I haven't been to Bowie Town Center except for once—way back when—so I can't speak much on how it compares to P.G. Plaza, but in terms of an actual "mall," P.G. Plaza is the cats meow for Prince George's County.

And when you take into consideration, all of the folks who shop at P.G. Plaza from outside the Hyattsville area, that's when the opposing argument starts to become valid... P.G. Plaza is not catering to the changing demographic. I can walk outside now and throw a stone and practically hit P.G. Plaza, that's how close I am. And, yet, I'd rather travel a half hour or more to go to Pentagon City or even Westfield Wheaton, to do any type of "real" shopping. I'm not saying that P.G. Plaza needs to have a Lord & Taylor, Nordstroms, Saks Fifth Avenue, or an actual Guess? store ... but they could definitely support much higher regarded and more expensive stores, within the mall. When I go to Pentagon City... I'm shopping at Armani Exchange, Guess?, American Eagle, and I'll even walk into True Religion every now and then. Even Westfield Wheaton has Express and Express for Men, which I sort of like. I don't have anything close to those options at P.G. Plaza. Where am I going to go?? DTLR? Macys (which isn't even a Tier 3 Macy's such as the one at Pentagon City or even a Tier 2 Macy's such as the one at Westfield Wheaton)? Am I going to go to JCPenney? Or how about Target? What are my options? P.G. County is literally kissing money away. I can't tell you the last time I've spent over $50 on non-dress clothing at P.G. Plaza, besides going to a shoe store.

Going back to Macy's, that's a good example of what a lot us are talking about. When they were opening the Macy's at Westfield Wheaton, I applied for a job and was called back for an interview. They confirmed at the interview, what many "outsiders" or us Joe Schmoe's, had already basically known: not all Macy's are the same in what they offer and how nice they are. They informed us Macy's has three different levels or tiers. "Tier 1" Macy's are the craptacular Macy's that you'll find at a mall such as P.G. Plaza or Laurel Mall. It's like the bargain basement, watered-down Macy's. You get the bare essentials and Tier 1 Macy's stores are basically on the same level as a typical JCPenney. Then, there's "Tier 2" Macy's. Those are moderately nice Macy's, that are pretty much in a league of their own. A Tier 2 Macy's would be one you'd find at most Montgomery County malls, such as Westfield Wheaton or Wheatfield Montgomery Mall. Then, you have the grand "Tier 3" Macy's. Those are the Macy's that can actually compete with big name stores such as Nordstroms, Neiman Marcus, Lord & Taylor, etc. Now, Tier 3 Macy's obviously aren't on the same level as those aforementioned competitors, but they are close. If you walked into the Macy's at P.G. Plaza and it was possible to go next door to an exact replica of the Macy's at Pentagon City, you'd never in million years guess that you were in the same store of the same name. The difference is literally night + day. You couldn't pay me to find anything I'd want at that dump Macy's at P.G. Plaza, but I don't think I'd have enough money to get everything I'd want at the Macy's at Pentagon City. And I'm sure that, perhaps, most people as of now couldn't afford what they'd offer at a Tier 3 Macy's—at P.G. Plaza—but P.G. Plaza could most definitely support a Tier 2 Macy's, such as the one at Westfield Wheaton.

That's a lot of food for thought and very much true for the most but that tier rating system goes for every name brand chain store in the PGC region. Walmart, Lowe's, Home Depot some chain restaurants, as well as every other business will build the facility to reflect the socioeconomic status of the clientele. Building a mega store catering to a financially secure clientele that pays for and expects superior service is not going to be as affordable to those who frequent a lower tiered store of the same name.
Why I repeated you in the above paragraph is to make a point that every merchant from McDonald's, Walmart, Gas stations, banks, car parts stores as well as car repair shops, drug stores, grocery stores and everything else has that chameleon ability to do the same. If you travel to a city in the mid west and go to a shopping center in an upscale part of that town the change is remarked.
Hecht's and Woodies at Iverson Mall, both no longer there, were probably standard stores when they first opened as could be seen if ever shopping at newer, upscale versions of those stores at malls such as Landover, Springfield, Tyson's, Landmark and others. They were like upscale Sears or Wards. I used to shop at Woodies but that place started crumbling as did Hecht's. The big Woodies downtown was their stand alone flagship for years.

A funny observation I made years ago is a shopping mall may have a lot of neat stuff but as soon as you learn what is there and patronize those you need it becomes familiar and boring. You want a new mall that is bigger, faster, better, more!

Mall at Prince George's can definitely support some higher end stores. Not only are there professionals who work in the area who probably wouldn't mind spending money at nice places, but there are also towns near by like College Park, University Park and the Brookland part of DC that don't have the same type of shopping in their areas but have the income level to support some higher-end brands. It just doesn't make sense. University Park has like one of the top 1 or 2 incomes in the county and it's literally 5 minutes away. Why couldn't Hyattsville take advantage of that demographic?

I fit the changing demographic in the Hyattsville area and I have no where to shop in PG Plaza, I would rather drive to Pentagon City or Tysons Corner also to do some shopping. Stores like: Abercrombie, H&M, Express, Armani Exchange, Aldo, Urban Outfitters, Forever 21, etc... would do pretty well at PG Plaza, there aren't any of these stores anywhere in PG County which is sad and these aren't even high-end stores. This is the closest enclosed mall to UMD which is the largest university in Maryland so I think it would do fine.

I wonder if they have tried to get a more diverse store listing at this mall and if these stores are even willing to come to PG Plaza yet. Most of my friends live in PG county and they all travel 30-45 mins to NoVA to do all of there serious shopping.

And Khemistry is the Macy's in Marlow Heights a tier 0 store, that has the be the worst Macy's I have ever been to. I am surprised that store is still open!

You know when I was reading what he said, that was the first one that popped up in my head too. That store is awful.

Lol me too I actually think its improved over the years. I'll go in there for work shirts. I remember when it was a Hechts even as a kid I knew it wasn't the same as the Hechts in Virginia or downtown.
