Considering a job transfer to the DC area and hoping someone can help us find a good location to start looking for rentals? I know we've been spoiled in North Carolina (real estate for pennies!), and I have no idea what the traffic situation is like.

What cities should I target if I want less than a 30 min drive or subway ride to the Union Station area? Ideally under $3k/month for > 2000 sq ft with a yard so my puppy can roam free.

Any other things I should take into consideration? I've heard that MD is better for taxes than VA, and north DC is better for traffic, but I'm flying blind, so I'd welcome any feedback.

You'll have to add what sort of setting you're looking for - in the city or suburbs?

Honestly I'm open. I think the fact that I need a fenced yard keeps me out of "in the city".

Not exactly so on either of those. Which state is better for taxes deepends on your tax situation. Generally, Virginia taxes are less, but not tons less. Traffic on the North side of DC can be pretty rough. I have a hard time with someone who says it's better.

Union Station area means you should look in areas along the Red Line of Metro. That would be Bethesda, North Bethesda, Rockville, or Gaithersburg on one side, and Silver Spring, Takoma Park, Wheaton, Forest Glen, or Glenmont areas on the other side.

Takoma Park and the Red Line are in your future.
It will be very nice.
