That's states. Education Week looks at high school exit exams, AP and SAT participation, etc. Nothing about scores, just participation.

Ok, the original post of this thread is the DMV version of going up to someone and saying "YO MOMMA IS FAT AND SHE UGLY TOO," and as usual, people totally take the bait.

Nobody is dissing VA. It is a good state. I'm also not tryibg to compare or have a VS. Instead this thread wants to explore what makes Maryland better.

CryHavoc, I don't know what your lifestyle or household situation is, or what factors you consider important. If you're referring to Prince Georges County, you do get a lot more housing for your money there, and there is less traffic on their Beltway than there is in NoVA. But there significantly fewer quality jobs in PG County, so most residents there have to commute far away - plus there has always been more crime in PGC - although it's definitely dropping - and also lower-rated schools. And without much of a corporate tax base in PG County, nearly all their revenues must be raised through property taxes. (Only 4% of Federal jobs in the metro region are located in PGC).

Virginia consistently is rated a better business location climate than Maryland. One of NoVA's biggest problems continues to be traffic, and the unwillingness of the state govt. (dominated by southerners) to fund NoVA's transportation improvements. MD as a whole is more liberal than VA on many issues- partly due to VA being more southern and its government dominated by downstate culture. Just to give one of many examples, MD has had WAY WAY more Women holding political office over the years, than VA ever has. Also, Gun control, Mental health funding, providing paved shoulders on roadways, and public transportation are other areas in which MD greatly surpasses VA.
So liberalism in maryland is good? We give in-state tuition to illegal aliens and have some of the highest taxes in the nation, and they are increasing every year with the recent hikes on the income, tobacco, and alcohol taxes and now they want to raise the gas tax again.

And yes, in Maryland, rural residents of the Eastern Shore and Western Maryland are expected to see a tax hike everytime Montgomery County needs more mass transit. Why should residents of Lynchburg and Danville pay for mass transit projects in Arlington? And at least illegal aliens will never get in-state tuition in Virginia, and the death penalty will always be on the books there.

I thought Arlington and the rest of NOVA funded transportation projects in Lynchburg and Danville?

Do you realize that your ignorant, uneducated, and factually-incorrect comments make you look like an idiot and decrease any ounce of intelligence in this thread? Have you ever left your computer and actually been to NoVA?

Cry Havoc, you can't be serious that NoVA is not diverse. Have you even actually been in any public schools in NoVA recently ? Throughout the NoVA region, they are extremely diverse, in a balanced sense. Around 40% of Fairfax County's current population is Black, Hispanic, or Asian. The demographics you describe, were more true 40 years or more ago.

During the years I lived in Pr Geo Co MD (outside the Beltway), the schools for many miles around were 95% African-American (by actual statistical measures) - thus not diverse at all.

Who pays for the roads on the Eastern Shore? Western Maryland?

NOVA pays for transportation projects for the rest of the state including a $1.4 billion toll road between Suffolk and Petersburg to replace a highway that doesn't have that much traffic to begin with

Truth hurts. Notice you have no facts to counter, just personal attacks because you are butthurt that MD is better.

To another poster, Nova is diverse, but nothing like Maryland around DC.

LOL I think you're a troll.

The Washington Post did a detail study on the matter and NoVa is far more diverse than Maryland especially PG. Diverse doesn't mean no White people.
