Hello, new member here looking for some advice

My girlfriend recently got a job in DC and we are looking to relocate. She found an apartment complex in Temple Hills, MD, that looks very promising. It's a 1 bed/1 bath right in our price range (max about $1500) and seems to have some nice features. Like a pool, gym, utilities are included, gated entry, parking, etc.

Here's a link to their site...

However, I looked up the crime rates for the immediate and surrounding areas and all of the reports show high crime levels. We aren't expecting to live in the nicest area but I'd like to know she (and myself I guess) will be safe going to the local stores and such.

Does anyone have any personal experience with this area? I'd like to know what you think and if it would be a good idea to live here. Thanks a ton for any help with this!

My cousin used to live in that complex. From me talking to her she said it was safe mainly because it was gated and separated from the rest of the area. If you want to live near nice stores and nice things, then this isn't the place for you. But if you want a place to lay your head and don't mind driving a bit to get to places, just to save some money then it might be a good option. Your assessment of the area outside of it is accurate. It's not a good area, but having the gate there definitely helps immensely.

Ok perfect thanks! That's pretty much what we were expecting to hear really. Do you know by any chance where she went for supplies/groceries? That's what I'm mostly worried about, since she'll mostly be going right to the metro for her commute to work.

I don't know, but there is a Giant in the Marlow Heights Shopping Center a few lights down. That is actually one of the better Giant grocery stores that I've been to. I used to go there quite a bit when I lived near there. I highly recommend that as a grocery store especially since it's one of the closest anyway. The alternative is there is a Safeway on Alabama Avenue in DC, but you definitely have to be careful because that area can be sketchy too.

I concur with PGtitans, Doubt if anything personally would happen to you in the complex, it's kind of an island in the area. The surrounding area in particular on the Maryland side is crap and where a lot of the crime PG is becoming infamous for is located.

Although for $1500 you maybe able to do better.

Ok, would you guys have any suggestions on where to look? $1500 being our max for now... Issue is she is moving soon and now other places have waiting lists it seems.

Thanks again for the info

Many places in Northern PG County (in and surrounding Hyattsville) can be a much better buy for the money, specifically the Hyattsville Arts District. I'm assuming you all need access to public transportation (subway) so that limits you. Otherwise, I'd suggest places like Beltsville, Laurel, and Old Greenbelt. I'm familiar with many other areas, but not with how much the cost of living is, so that's why my list is so short and centralized... I am a Northern PG County resident, myself.

Ok cool i'm looking into that now. And yes we definitely would like metro access. You believe northern PG to be safer? That's really my main concern to be honest haha

Safer and not too far from decent services.
