FCPS to Start E-Mailing Notices of Student Absence - Sun Gazette Newspapers: News

Could you all see something like this happening in Maryland?

Do you think it would help truancy?

Montgomery County already does that when my kids miss school. The last time I got one, a sub screwed up and said my kid was absent. She wasn't. We were able to correct it thanks to the email.

Yeah, a lot of the systems have either an auto-call or email notification.

And no, it wouldn't help truancy. Generally speaking kids who are illegally absent have parents who don't care about it or can't/won't fix it.

Most systems file charges against a few parents every year for knowingly allowing their kid to be truant. The most common defense is "I can't make him/her go to school". No amount of emails will fix that.

I think it should be done at all levels. Every so often we see stories where children disappear and hours are lost because the school knew they were absent but the parent didn't know until the child doesn't come home after school. Or the rare occurance where a child 'is left on the bus'
