Just wondering, how much apts cost in a decent DC suburb? Not all new and luxury, but ok, 1 bd with washer/dryer in unit, parking.

It varies wildly and depends how far from DC proper you want to live and what you consider a decent suburb.

In Silver Spring, the lowest price I find for one with a W/D in the unit is $1165. They are what I would consider decent but no way luxurious.

Yes, I lived in 20902 for 35 years and never had a problem with crime.

Have you looked at various apartment rental web sites and performed a comparison between MD and VA apartment rentals? It takes out the guesswork.

Agreed. Hotpads.com features the median rental prices for each category of apartment, 1-edroom, 2-bedroom, etc. You can tell very quickly that Alexandria is more expensive than Langley Park (for example).

For the OP's question, I think Maryland is usually cheaper than Virginia for a comparable commuting distance from the District. I also think that the Virginia suburbs are generally viewed as more desirable, hence the prices are higher.
