I am relocating to Maryland from North Carolina. My job will be in Upper Marlboro but I will be covering the areas of Anne Arundel, Calvert, St. Mary's, Charles and Prince Georges counties. I will not have to go into the office every day but will be traveling the area. Where are some places that I should consider living? Here is some background: single white male, 33 years old, looking for a small economical apartment somewhat close to restaurants, shopping and night life. I would really like to keep the rent around $1,000 for a one bedroom. Thanks.

There is no such place. If there was, there would be no availability because trust me most people are looking for those things in this region. With that said, you are going to have to prioritize what you consider the most important things. Is the $1000 price negotiable? Can you stand going a few miles before getting to night life? Those are things that might help narrow down your list.

Thanks. The 1K is negotiable. I can go a few hundred dollars more if need be. A few miles from nightlife is fine. The most important things are safety and being within a few miles of restaurants and shopping would be OK.

I saw you posted up about Annapolis. That might be one of the best options. Just beware, that it's quite a commute to Upper Marlboro. I think as far as other areas, you aren't going to have much of nightlife, restaurants, etc. that are close by.

Thank you pgtvatitans. I really appreciate the input. From what I have gathered, the Annapolis area may work best for me. I like more of the city feel, as I lived in Atlanta for about 10 years before I moved to NC last year. When I first start my job, I will be going to the office in Upper Marlboro pretty often but as I go on I should not be going into the office as much. How long do you think the commute would be from Annapolis? I would need to be at the office at 7:30 or 8:00 whenever I do need to go in? Thanks for the help!

You should consider the College Park area. Annapolis is a pretty small city. It may suit your needs but I think a commute from College Park is doable. Also might want to consider some of the homes around the Largo Metro Station commute should be pretty good and you could easily Metro in to DC for Nightlife.

It's about 20-25 miles away depending on where you are going and where you are coming from. As far as I know the traffic is not bad, but taking 301 south, there will be a ton of lights to go through that can lengthen the time.

EdwardA's suggestion of College Park might not be a bad second option. The only issue you might find is it gets really congested in that area during rush hour and you will have a bear of a time just getting out of the College Park/Hyattsville area just go that way.

What about renting an English Basement style apartment in a SFH? That may get you down to that price point. There are a lot of large homes where the owners will rent out the basement apartment or in-law suite.

I would avoid College Park/Hyattsville ONLY because the traffic on route 1 will frustrate you if you need to constantly be traveling all around. I own a house in Hyattsville and have lived here for 10 years, and it's awesome. But the price will be an issue for you and again, the traffic.
