3. My wife is currently working at CDC in Atlanta and she will look to transfer to CDC office in DC or looking a position in FDA or NIH.

Default Young Family Relocating to Ft. Meade Area

We are a very young family... newlywed and pregnant. We are looking to rent with a budget around $2,400. We would love to be in a safe area with other young families. A shorter commute to Ft. Meade would be nice. We are also southern, so a tad on the conservative side. We were looking at places in the Laurel area, I have also heard Severn is not bad, but would love some additional input.

Thanks in Advance!

Hi Wolfpack3, I'd recommend Columbia and Ellicott City. Laurel is fine, too, but it has some nicer areas and some junky areas. Someone who knows Laurel better than I can speak to specifics or you can search the forums for info. Welcome!

Look in Columbia or Ellicott City in Howard....Great Neighborhoods, Great Schools, family friendly, close to two major cities (D.C. being WAY better than Baltimore) my opinion Lol.....Good luck

Is there a way to move my post to this thread? I didn't read this before asking my question about relocating.

Nope. It's okay. You're good. People don't use it half the time anyway. But there should be a lot of info in here from other posters.

Default Moving to Maryland - Help!

Hi! I could really use some advice about Maryland. My husband just accepted a job in Silver Springs, and although we're very excited, I've never really spent any time in the state. My first instinct was to look for something in the VA suburbs, which I'm more familiar with, but everyone has told us that the commute will be terrible. We currently live in suburban Connecticut and my husband commutes into NYC, which takes about 1.5 hours on public transportation, so we are really looking forward to changing that. We have two kids (one in high school, one in middle school) and of course I want to be in a really good school district. I have tentatively started looking in Gaithersburg; Bethesda, which seems to have the top rated high school, seems a little too expensive.

In general, does anyone have any advice about Gaithersburg or somewhere else I should be looking? We will start out renting, need at least 3 bedrooms and would like to stay under $3000/month, if that helps.

Any help is very, very much appreciated!!

Yeah, commuting from NoVa would make zero sense. Gaithersburg also would be needlessly far away. Bethesda, of course, have some of the top schools in the nation, but as you note the prices reflect that.

Assuming your husband is working in downtown Silver Spring ("Silver Spring" is a massive swath of the county) then living "inside the beltway" or just outside of it would make the most sense. Bethesda, Takoma Park, and Silver Spring itself (particularly zips 20910 and 20901) would all have at least a few houses in your budget. They all feed into excellent high schools. Your money will go further on the Silver Spring end of the county if you're in need of a larger house/lot.

As mentioned in your post elsewhere, if you care to mention exactly where the job is located, it could make a big difference in commuting time if you are driving towards "downtown" Silver Spring (heavy traffic, slow commute) or away from downtown.

I am still a little unclear about geography in Maryland, but I have been told that it is "inside the beltway."

Thanks to everyone for the wonderful advice so far!
