I'm a 23 yr old asian female moving to Downtown Silver Spring from Los Angeles. I didn't realize my classes would be so late. Is it safe for someone like myself to walk home from the metro around 8pm? It's about a 10 minute walk west. I was also considering taking the bus to my apartment since it stops right in front. By the way I look like I'm probably 16 haha. And yes I know not to talk on my cell phone, etc. but DC sounds much scarier than LA.

Also, any tips for staying safe on the metro at night? I've never had to rely on public transportation before.

Thanks

It's not too bad, but it's not that great, either. There are some panhandlers/homeless people around the metro station. The area around the 7-11 and McDonald's is particularly problematic.

Where are you going to school? Perhaps the forum could offer you better advice on where to live and how to get to/from class safely with a little more information. Silver Spring is considered "up and coming"....there's really no definitive answer to your question because "**** happens" around there from time to time.

My personal opinion no. That's too late for a woman to be walking around alone in that area. If you end up having no choice, I suggest you get a taser and some mase or either find someone to walk with you.

I lived there for four years and took the metro at all hours (I was a student). I am a petite female in my 20s and I never felt uncomfortable, and there are always lots of commuters walking around, even at 8pm

Once the fall comes it will be dark by 8pm. If there will be a lot of people around then I would do it but if not nope.

Do you really feel this way? And why? I mean, Silver Spring is no Shang-ri-la but I can't imagine any place within a 10 minute walking distance of that metro where I'd be afraid to walk at 8pm. 8pm is not like 3am or something. I've seen more homeless people in Arlington. The scariest thing I've ever seen in Silver Spring is... actually, I've never seen anything remotely frightening in Silver Spring. It's not a very exciting place.

Unless your walking around naked, you should be fine.

8pm, 9pm is fine. I would probably even say 11pm is fine too. Like a previous poster said, it's not Shangri-La, but I'm confident in saying DC is not scarier than LA. Baltimore vs LA, now I would probably say differently.

Since you indicated 10 minute walk west, I'm assuming you're going to be living around the Blairs or Summit Hills area. It's a good area.

On the Metro, just keep your belongings close to you. There are some instances of people snatching an I-phone/bag and quickly running out the door just as the train is about to head out. However, this is not rampant.
