Hey everyone,

A potential roommate of mine is wondering what the commute is like to Reston, VA, for work. He would need to be in at 8:30 and would probably stay until 6.

I assume he would take 270 to route 7? What are traffic patterns like around that time, or, are there alternate routes? Also, what hours would be best if he were to make this commute?

To clarify, distance isn't really an issue -- it's just the amount of time spent on the road.

I appreciate all the responses in advance -- thanks, guys!

I commuted to Herndon from Silver Spring for a time. The best alternative to Route 7 is the Dulles Toll Road. I think the cost of the tolls is worth the time saved. It took me 45 minutes in the AM at 7AM. My experience was that the traffic is heaviest for an 8:30 arrival time. If the job allows flexibility, I would suggest an earlier morning trip if possible. The evening trip was usually 55 minutes. If the Cabin John Bridge is backed up in the evening, take Route 123 to the Chain Bridge and into the District and find your way to River Road or Massachusetts Avenue to Bethesda.

How much were the tolls, 1-way? and how about at the evening -- at 6pm will roads generally be clear?

I ask because he might adapt the routine I have (I commute from Baltimore, MD, to Columbia, MD) and go early in the morning to the gym, but be in Columbia for more than 8 hours total.

Absolutely not. They are a mess at 6, and going from VA to MD at that time is going with traffic across the bridge.
